Transport Commissioner Rosanna Law on Thursday called on vehicle owners to apply for the tag specially designed for a new e-toll system as soon as possible, noting the tolling system will be introduced at all government tunnels by phases by the end of this year.

Law told a Commercial Radio programme that the “HKeToll” will first be rolled out at Tsing Sha Control Area on February 26, replacing the previous payment methods.

She reminded drivers who haven’t applied for the e-payment tag that they do not have to stop to pay at toll booths, and a picture will be taken to record the car plate number.

“We would notify you that you’ve used a tunnel on a particular date, in this case it’s the Tsing Sha Control Area. You will have to pay the toll within 14 days, since you did not do so at the time,” she explained.

The system will be introduced next at Shing Mun and Lion Rock Tunnels – where the payment methods are relatively simpler, followed by the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, the Eastern Harbour Crossing and the Western Harbour Tunnel this summer, Law said.

The Aberdeen Tunnel and Tate’s Cairn Tunnel will start using the system by the end of the year, and it will be installed at the Tai Lam Tunnel when its franchise expires in 2025.

By then, the “Autotoll” system will be replaced completely, she said.
