A 16-year-old girl is in a critical condition at Queen Mary Hospital with flu, despite receiving a vaccination ahead of the flu season.
The Centre for Health Protection had previously been in good health. She was admitted to hospital on Tuesday and was later confirmed to have influenza A, complicated by severe pneumonia.
The girl is now being treated in the hospital's accident and emergency unit.
A severe flu outbreak has forced the city's kindergartens and childcare centres to close early for the Lunar New Year holiday.
It's left public hospital wards full beyond capacity, prompting the government to award HK$500 million in funding to the Hospital Authority to hire extra staff and pay overtime.
