The Civil Human Rights Front is expected to give an update on its future on Sunday afternoon amid growing speculation that it will disband.

Reports said the front's remaining members met on Friday to discuss a proposal to dissolve. Its acting convenor, Chung Chung-fai, told media on Saturday that an announcement was planned for the following day.

Since 2002, The Civil Human Rights Front has organised some of Hong Kong's most high-profile protests, including the annual July 1 march.

However, it has come under increasing pressure, especially since the implementation of the national security law last year.

Several of the umbrella body's constituent groups have pulled out, including the now-defunct Professional Teachers' Union.

On Friday, the police chief, Raymond Siu, said in an interview with state media the force was looking into potential violations of the security law by the Civil Human Rights Front.

In April, the force accused the front of breaching the Societies Ordinance and demanded information on its finances and activities.
