Hong Kong on Monday recorded the first child fatality of this winter's flu season, after a two-year-old boy infected with the influenza A virus died.

The boy was taken to the Tin Shui Wai Hospital emergency ward on January 20 due to fever and seizures and was later transferred to Tuen Mun Hospital.

His condition worsened and he died at 7 pm on Monday.

A hospital spokesperson said a private doctor had diagnosed the boy with flu before his family sought help at public hospitals, and the child had not been vaccinated.

As of Sunday, 102 people have died due to influenza - mostly elderly people.
