At least six people were injured after unknown assailants attacked them by shooting fireworks from a moving car outside a police station in the Northern New Territories in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Scores of angry people gathered outside the police station in Tin Shui Wai amid reports that two young activists had been taken there.
The pair, who had been guarding a Lennon Wall in the new town, were reportedly detained after a confrontation with a local man.
But as the crowd protested for their release, a car drove past and people inside lobbed fireworks into their midst.
They then sped off up Tin Yiu Road apparently causing the driver of a KMB vehicle to swerve out of its way and crash into railings.
The injuries received by the protesters apparently included blisters and tinnitus. At least five people were taken to hospital.
The police bomb disposal unit was called to the scene.
