A senior fireman was sentenced to 120 hours of community service on Friday for borrowing money from three of his subordinates, in breach of Civil Service regulations.

Ng Lun-kwong, 53, earlier pleaded guilty to accepting an advantage as a public servant after the three co-workers lent him HK$70,000 between them.

Civil Service rules ban public officers from borrowing money from lower-ranked colleagues and they are also only allowed to borrow a maximum of HK$3,000 from a friend.

Eastern Court heard that Ng had lost money in property investments and he got into difficulties when a month's salary was held up by the taxman because he hadn't paid his tax bill on time.
