Housing chief Frank Chan said on Saturday that work to refit a factory building into transitional housing, the first project of its kind, can start as soon as the middle of next year, with the new homes ready for residents in the first quarter of 2022.
Writing on his blog, Chan pointed out that HK$61.5 million in funding was approved for the project at Hung To Road in Kwun Tong.
He said the ten-storey block would consist of more than 110 units, most of them catering to three-person or four-person families.
There would also be several two-person flats and a barrier-free unit.
Chan said the units are expected to be able to house about 370 people.
The minister said the progress was the result of efforts by the Society for Community Organisation, kind-hearted landlords and his colleagues in the Task Force on Transitional Housing.
He added that the government has so far found land enough for more than 13,000 transitional housing units.
