New People's Party legislator Eunice Yung says the government should introduce stricter measures to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, including mandatory universal testing, so business here can get back on its feet.
Speaking on RTHK's Letter to Hong Kong, Ms Yung said people were being laid off now that the Employment Support Scheme had ended. She said the scheme should be revived and the government should take a more forceful approach towards tackling the pandemic.
"The HKSAR Government obviously has failed to address the pressing needs of the people and meet their expectations. These anti-epidemic measures and restrictions, which aren’t tackling the root cause, are presenting even more difficulties for business, and there are inevitably expectations for more powerful measures such as mandatory universal testing to bring the caseload down to zero as soon as possible," she said.
Yung also said a government app, that warns people if they have visited a place where there has been an infection, had failed to take off. Users of the Leave Home Safe app must scan a QR code when entering a participating building or business and then click on the app again when they leave.
"Furthermore, the “LeaveHomeSafe” mobile application has yet to be popularised among residents, shops and restaurants. Should the Government continue to adopt a laid-back and half-baked approach to cope with the virus, we may as well predict that the pandemic will only continue to come back to haunt us again and again, making it even more difficult for Hong Kong to achieve “zero infection” and reopen the border with the mainland, further eroding confidence in the community," she said.
Zero infections for at least 14 days is understood to be the condition for reopening the border with the mainland.
