Wong Hon-meng, the Assistant Director of the Environmental Protection Department, says there are sufficient quotas for local recyclers to export waste paper to companies on the mainland.

Last September, local recycling firms took part in a seven-day boycott of scrap paper to protest against stricter mainland rules on solid waste imports.

Speaking on the sidelines of RTHK's City Forum, Wong said the number of import permits from mainland authorities is enough for local exporters.

"The actual waste paper generated in Hong Kong, when compared to the quota allocated by Beijing, is only a very small portion," he said.

Wong said it was more important for Hong Kong recyclers to work closer with mainland paper plants. He also said there was room for Hong Kong recyclers to upgrade.
