Hundreds of elderly people joined a silent march from Chater Garden to the government's headquarters on Wednesday evening, to call on the administration to address people’s demands over the extradition bill saga.
The demonstration was organised by people from the older generation, who wanted to show their support for the young people who took part in recent anti-extradition protests.
They were also demanding that the government withdraw the bill completely, set up an independent commission of inquiry to look into recent events, drop charges against protesters and give Hong Kong people universal suffrage.
Some demonstrators said they were saddened by the clashes between police and young protesters recently.
Fiona Tam, who is in her fifties, said she supports the young protesters, and she believes their intention is to make Hong Kong a better place.
Tam also said she has sympathies for the police, and blamed government inaction led to the clashes between protesters and police officers.
Another participant said he had gained a lot from Hong Kong's economic boom in the past. He said he should contribute to society by taking part in the march and supporting the youngsters.
A British citizen who has been living in the SAR for more than 10 years also joined the rally. He said the One Country, Two System principle should be upheld as it provides safety for residents of the city.
