A former spokesman for the now-defunct group Hong Kong Indigenous, Edward Leung, was released from jail in the early morning hours of Wednesday, having completed his sentence for his role in the 2016 Mong Kok riot.

It’s understood that the Correctional Services Department arranged for him to leave the Shek Pik prison on Lantau at around 3am, in accordance with a police request and having taken into consideration the wish and safety of Leung.

At around 5.30am, Leung posted a message on his social media page saying he had safely returned to his family.

He added he will have to observe a supervision order upon his release from jail.

Leung said he will stay away from the spotlight and stop using social media, and won't give any interviews or receive visits.

He also said he will treasure his time with his family and try to resume a normal life.

Shortly after, his social media page was closed.

Leung was sentenced to six years in prison in 2018 for rioting and assaulting a police officer during the Mong Kok riot.
