  • Education Bureau should probe suicide: PTU

Fung Wai-wah talks to RTHK's Janice Wong

The Professional Teachers' Union president has called on the Education Bureau to carry out an independent investigation into the suicide of a teacher at a Tin Shui Wai primary school last week, instead of leaving it to the institution to deal with it.

Fung Wai-wah said the bureau expects many problems to be solved at the school level. "But sometimes the problems that happen... the origin maybe the management. So if they have to do the investigation themselves, I think for some cases that is not appropriate," he said.

He said the bureau also needs to review its responsibilities. He said it should not just deal with labour disputes, but also teachers' complaints as well.

Fung said schools may not always be in a suitable position to deal with complaints from teachers who may wish to remain anonymous.

He told RTHK's Janice Wong that the PTU is helping the Tin Shui Wai school to deal with the incident.
