A weather expert said on Wednesday it's relatively easy to predict the track of Typhoon Kompasu compared with the storm that hit Hong Kong last week.
Leung Wing-mo, spokesman of Hong Kong Meteorological Society, said that's because Kompasu's surrounding atmosphere was stable as the typhoon moved west steadily across the South China Sea.
He said the observatory had more confidence this time round in making forecasts.
“In the case of Kompasu, it’s more straightforward. Different typhoons behave very differently,” he said.
The observatory came under criticism last week for changing its predictions when Tropical Cyclone Lionrock edged closer to Hong Kong.
Leung also told RTHK's Backchat programmme that climate change would probably lead to fewer but stronger typhoons in the future.
“It’s a matter of adaptation, mitigation because we’re going to face stronger typhoons. So it’s important that we, as the population in Hong Kong, and also the government have to do a lot of things to prevent significant damage or people losing their lives,” he said.
