  • 'Drunk man grabs police gun, injures two officers'

Two police officers have been injured after a drunk man grabbed one of the officers' guns from his holster and fired three shots at them, the police chief said on Thursday.

The incident happened around 5.30am at a flat in Kwong Lam Court in Siu Lek Yuen where the officers had gone to deal with a family dispute following a complaint about a noisy row.

Both the injured officers were in a stable condition at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

Police commissioner Stephen Lo said the suspect was found in a highly emotional state.

"When our officers tried to talk to him and subdue him, this man suddenly grabbed the gun of one of the officers, and fired three shots," he said.

One officer was hit in his right arm and leg. His colleague was luckier. He's said to have escaped with fairly minor injuries after a bullet scratched his leg.

Police reinforcements quickly subdued and arrested the 29-year-old man.

Commissioner Lo said a top priority is to find out how the suspect, who was drunk at the time, managed to snatch a gun from a police holster which has special design features supposed to prevent such events.

"We will carry out a thorough investigation into this incident, to see what the reason is. We will consider the next step after finding the reason," he said.
