  • Drug smuggler who jumped bail gets 37 years

A man who jumped bail during his drug trafficking trial in 2017 has been sentenced to 37 years and 4 months in jail by the High Court.

Lee Ming-ho and three other men were arrested for smuggling HK$10 million worth of the drug ice into Hong Kong in 2016.

The case went to trial in the High Court in September 2017. But Lee absconded and was on the run until he was arrested again a year ago.

Two of Lee's accomplices were sentenced to 33 years in jail, while the third defendant was acquitted.

Lee was put on trial again two weeks ago for drug trafficking and failing to surrender to custody.

Taking the 33-year sentence as a benchmark, the court sentenced him to 37 years and four months behind bars – which police say is one of the heaviest sentences for drug trafficking in recent years.

A chief inspector of the force's narcotics bureau, Alan Tam, said the defendant was the brains behind the operation, and instructed the others to fetch the drugs and supervise their delivery.

Tam said the sentence is reasonable, and he believed it would have a deterrent effect on other drug traffickers.
