Some drivers smashed up a couple of taxis with hammers outside the Department of Justice on Tuesday as part of a protest against ride hailing services, saying Uber is hitting their livelihoods hard and demanding that the government ban the platform.
As part of the protest, they also enacted a scene showing a man snatching a bowl of rice from a taxi driver and smashing it on the road, while a person wearing a mask of Transport Secretary Frank Chan looked on.
The protesters said Chan has done nothing to protect their livelihoods.
Around 150 protesters representing the taxi industry had earlier marched from the government's headquarters in Admiralty to Justice Place.
They said some drivers have seen their incomes drop by 30 percent in recent years. Moreover, some of the drivers have joined Uber to increase their incomes, the protesters said.
They said although Uber is not illegal as such, many Uber drivers are providing taxi services without a car hire permit, which is illegal.
