Hong Kong's sole member of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, Tam Yiu-chung, says people would be glorifying and rationalising violence if they sympathise or tolerate the extreme violent acts of some protesters.

Speaking on Commercial Radio, Tam said he doesn't want to see the PLA deployed to handle the demonstrations, however, he also believes the central government cannot turn a blind eye if things get out of control.

He said national laws can be applied here directly without going through a local legislative process if Beijing deems that the city is in a state of emergency.

Meanwhile the Chief Secretary, Matthew Cheung, has urged the public to say no to violence and show support to the police force for their strict enforcement of the law.

Writing on his weekly blog, Cheung commended the police's professionalism, saying that it is the most important defence line of social stability.
