The largest pro-Beijing party, DAB, has rubbished government efforts to recycle waste after a survey it organised found the majority of people give the administration's efforts very low marks.

The DAB said it surveyed around 1,000 people and 73 percent of them said the Carrie Lam administration is doing a lousy job at recycling.

The party called on the government to sort out its recycling policy before it introduces a levy for domestic solid waste by late next year.

The party said the government should provide more recycling bins on the streets, clean them more often, and intensify education campaigns to teach and encourage people to sort their rubbish properly.

DAB lawmaker Elizabeth Quat said many people don't do this because they believe all these recyclable materials are going to a landfill anyway. She said the government should help develop the recycling industry and increase its capacity.

In the survey, 34 percent of people said they don’t sort their rubbish. Some of them said their homes are too small to store separate containers for recyclables.

Quat said the government could learn from overseas examples and provide bags that can be hung on the wall to save space.
