Customs officers said on Monday that they had seized more than three kilogrammes of suspected rhino horn pieces at the airport, with the haul worth an estimated HK$620,000.

A 21-year-old male passenger had been intercepted after arriving in Hong Kong from Mozambique via Johannesburg and Doha.

The suspected rhino horn pieces were found inside a black plastic bag in a suitcase.

The maximum punishment for importing or exporting an endangered species without a licence is a fine of HK$10 million or 10 years in prison.
