Customs officers say they have made their largest seizure of smuggled rhino horns in five years – after finding 82.5 kilogrammes of horns and cut pieces in a shipment at Chek Lap Kok on Friday.

The department said the haul would be worth around HK$16.5 million.

Officers said the transshipment cargo arrived in Hong Kong from South Africa, and was bound for Malaysia.

The cargo was declared as “auto parts” but officers became suspicious after viewing X-ray images.

The case has been handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.

Anyone found guilty of smuggling endangered species without a licence faces a maximum fine of HK$10 million and 10 years in jail.
