Professor Philip Chiu speaks to RTHK's Jimmy Choi

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has announced plans for a new medical research centre at the Science Park, to develop better robotic technology to be used in surgery.

It signed partnership deals for the project on Thursday with Imperial College London, ETH Zurich, and John Hopkins University, at a signing ceremony in Hong Kong presided over by Chief Executive Carrie Lam.

CUHK is looking for funding of HK$700 million from the SAR government to run a 15,000 square-foot centre, housing 40 to 50 researchers, for five years.

Professor Philip Chiu, who will help run the lab, told RTHK's Jimmy Choi that they hope to develop more precise and less harmful ways of diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal diseases.

Research projects will include improving robotic tools that can pass into the gastrointestinal tract for surgery, and refining a magnetic-guided endoscope for examining the small bowel.
