Scores of people gathered outside Eastern Court on Wednesday morning as 44 people prepared to face charges of rioting over Sunday's clashes with police in Western district.

More than 50 people were queuing for a seat in the public gallery just before 9am. A 45th suspect, who was charged with possessing an offensive weapon, will also appear before the court after being charged on Tuesday evening.

The suspects are among 49 people arrested during the police clearance operation that night. Officers said more arrests may be made later.

After news of the charges emerged, fresh clashes began as protesters gathered outside Kwai Chung police station

Rioting charges carry a maximum sentence of up to 10 years.
