The Department of Health says samples of suspected counterfeit HPV vaccines, seized at two Hong Kong medical centres last month, have failed a sterility test.
The vaccine, which is used to prevent cervical cancer, has been in short supply here due to doubts about vaccination quality on the mainland, with many mainland women coming to Hong Kong for jabs.
The department said, so far, it hadn't received any reports of adverse reactions, which could be caused by micro-organisms. But it said anyone who felt unwell, or was concerned, should see a doctor.
It also said interim results from last month had already indicated there were no hazardous impurities.
The health department said it was now seeking prosecution advice from the Department of Justice.
The penalty for supplying a sub-standard drug is a fine of HK$10,000 and up to three months in prison.
