Some residents in Kwai Fong were avoiding the MTR on Monday morning, expressing worries that residue of tear gas fired inside the station the previous night may pose a health hazard.

A parent said she can smell chemicals inside the MTR station, and she’s put a mask on her child.

A man said he would take other forms of transport. He added he felt as if the police were treating protesters like their enemy when they fired tear gas inside the station.

Another man, who works in Kwai Fong, said the police were “shameless” to have used tear gas inside the station, violating their guidelines.

Several young people wearing masks had been handing out masks to commuters and asking people to protect themselves.

The MTR Corporation has installed large fans inside the station.

The rail firm issued a statement early Monday morning, saying it’s very regrettable that officers had reportedly used rubber bullets inside the station, as it threatened the safety of staff and passengers.

It added staff members evacuated passengers when they saw smoke inside the station.

The company said it had relayed its concerns to the police, adding it condemns any form of violence.
