Hospital officials say by 10pm on Wednesday, 72 people had been treated for injuries they had suffered during violent clashes between police and people protesting against the government's extradition plans.

Those hurt were aged between 15 and 66, the Hospital Authority said.

Two people were seriously injured, while the rest were either in a stable condition or had already been discharged.

Police had fired rubber bullets and repeated volleys of tear gas as they clashed with protesters around the Legislative Council and on other roads in Admiralty.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross has announced it has set up a hotline to provide a counselling service in view of the turmoil in Hong Kong.

The group said psychologists and volunteers would man the hotline – at 3628 1180 – for at least the next couple of days.
