A major civil servants' union issued a statement on Monday condemning extradition bill protesters who have been blocking access to government buildings, saying they have broken the law and obstructed people’s daily lives.

The Hong Kong Chinese Civil Servants’ Association said anybody who surrounds court buildings, the government's headquarters, the police headquarters and other government offices prevents civil servants from providing services to the public.

The statement also condemned those who “threaten police officers and their family members", saying civil servants – including police officers – only follow their superiors’ instructions when performing their duties, and they should never have to shoulder any political responsibility.

The union called on all civil servants to maintain political neutrality as their work becomes “more difficult and challenging” in the face of the administration’s “unprecedented governance crisis”.

It also urged different sectors in society to “strengthen communication and rational dialogue” in order to restore social order.
