Civil Servant Rally Not A Mutiny, Says Organiser

The civil servant who is organising an anti-extradition rally on Friday said he is not looking for confrontation with the government, but aiming to mend the rift between the administration and the people.
Speaking on an RTHK programme on Monday, Michael Ngan said he noticed that many civil servants have signed petitions expressing concerns over the government’s response to demands of anti-extradition protesters, and over the police’s handling of last Sunday’s Yuen Long attack, he wanted to express such concerns through action.
Ngan, a Labour Department official, said the rally is not what some described as “a mutiny”, adding he merely wants to tell the public that civil servants have heard their views and are willing to convey them to the government.
He also said he hopes Chief Executive Carrie Lam and other top officials can meet face-to-face with civil servants to communicate and allay their worries.
He added the government must respond to people’s demand for an independent probe into the crisis, including allegations of police brutality.
Ngan added civil servants will continue to maintain their political neutrality and to serve the people professionally.
Ngan had earlier said he will submit an application to the police on Monday afternoon for the rally, which he plans to hold on Friday evening at Chater Garden in Central.
