Jessica Tso talks to RTHK's Wong Yin-ting

The Hong Kong Christian Council has urged churches to come up with their own policies against sexual harassment and abuse after a recent study revealed 55 allegations involving local places of worship – half of which were made against pastors or church leaders.

The council's assistant executive secretary, Jessica Tso, said more educational work on how to prevent or deal with sexual assault needs to be carried out.

Tso said many people are not aware of what constitutes harassment and what legal help victims can get. She said churches should not only adopt policies against sexual harassment, but continuously educate people about how to report such behaviour.

"The churches have actually got a legal responsibility. Because the victims not only can sue the persecutor, but [also] the whole church, because the church didn't provide a safe place for them to worship," she said.

Tso told RTHK's Wong Yin-ting that churches should also provide counselling services to victims.
