Beijing has accused Hong Kong’s last colonial governor, Chris Patten, of being "selectively blind" and making selective comments about the SAR.

During an exclusive interview with RTHK, Patten had said he shared the anxiety of his friends in Hong Kong when he watched footage of the Yuen Long attacks on Sunday, when the city was rocked by some of the worst violence seen since the handover 22 years ago.

Patten added that a commission of inquiry is a crucial step towards reconciliation in the city – a call made by many other prominent figures.

But speaking at a press conference in the capital, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Patten had deliberately refrained from commenting on the impact of the extradition bill protests on Hong Kong's rule of law, adding that his intentions were very clear.

She added that he hadn’t mentioned the behaviour of a small number of rioters, who recently stormed the Legislative Council complex and vandalised the liaison office.

Hua reiterated that Beijing opposes any foreign interference into Hong Kong's internal affairs.
