  • Cathay union warns of action over roster complaints

Cathay Pacific Airways Flight Attendants’ Union on Tuesday said its members had voted unanimously in support of action to fight for better rosters and longer layovers.

The union didn’t specify what action would be taken, adding that a strike would be the last resort.

The union’s vice-chairwoman, Grace Siu, told reporters after an emergency meeting with members that they didn’t want to affect Hong Kong people’s holiday plans, but want better communication with the airline’s management on rostering issues.

“We just want to let you know that we have the full support from members… but what’s the next action? We need to discuss and plan more so just stay tuned,” she said.

In a statement, Cathay Pacific reassured customers that its flights would continue as scheduled and said there was no need for concern.

It said it was grateful for the hard work and commitment of its cabin crews throughout the challenging pandemic years.

“We have experienced some temporary rostering issues which have arisen as the airline rebuilds its network. Many of these issues have already been resolved in time for the January roster. We ask for our crew’s patience as we continue to resolve the remaining issues as our network is restored,” the airline said.

“Despite the ongoing challenges the airline continues to face as it embarks on the road to recovery, a 3.3% salary increment for 2023 and an ex-gratia payment equivalent to one-month’s salary have been announced for all our eligible employees to recognise their commitment and effort during these difficult times.”
