A Cathay Dragon plane flying from Taiwan to Hong Kong was forced to make an emergency landing soon after take-off on Monday morning, after experiencing a "technical issue".

A spokesman for the airline said flight KA451 safely returned to the southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung at around 8:30am.

All 317 passengers and 13 crew members on board were safe, Cathay Dragon said.

Media reports in Taiwan said the Airbus A330 could have been struck by birds during its ascent.

Some Kaohsiung residents reported hearing an explosion and the island's Apple Daily newspaper quoted local aviation officials as saying that smoke came out of the jet's right engine during take-off.
