President of the Education University, Stephen Cheung, on Friday urged Chief executive Carrie Lam to learn from President of France, Emmanuel Macron, who talked to people on a daily basis after the “yellow vest" protests there and managed to stabilise the situation.

During an interaction with the students, Cheung promised them as much help possible by him and staff including medical treatments and legal advice if needed.

But he rejected the invitation from students to join the protest in Tai Po on Sunday.

The president of Lingnan University had joined the students during a protest march in Yuen Long, saying he had gone there to observe the situation.

But students are not satisfied with Cheung’s decision to stay away from the rally.

"I feel very disappointed. Because many of the students wanted president Cheung to go to the protest, to try to protect the students," said Ng Ka-yi, internal vice president of the student union.

Ng said a visit there would have made him understand why the students are on the street fighting for their rights.
