The Commissioner of the Foreign Affairs Office here has met the acting German consul-general to complain about the granting of asylum to two Hong Kong men.

Localists Ray Wong and Alan Li had been charged in connection with the 2016 Mong Kok riot but skipped bail and fled to Germany in 2017.

According to a Foreign Affairs Office statement, on Saturday Xie Feng told David Schmidt that Beijing strongly opposes the move, adding that Germany should abide by international norms and not shield criminals.

He said Berlin needs to respect the SAR's rule of law and judicial independence. Xie told the envoy that Germany should not interfere in Hong Kong and China's internal affairs.

On Friday the Chief Executive Carrie Lam summoned Schmidt to convey her similar objections and regrets over matter.
