Nearly a thousand architects have signed a petition expressed shock and distress at last Sunday's attacks at Yuen Long MTR station, where gangs of suspected triads in white T-shirts attacked passengers and other people returning from a demonstration.
The architects urged the government to completely withdraw the revised draft of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance and set up an independent investigation.
They also called on officials to be held accountable and for police to enforce the law impartially.
The statement said that the Yuen Long incident is not a political dispute. It said the attack was meant to intimidate the public and prevent people from peacefully expressing themselves.
The signatories said if such actions are tolerated, will only encourage violence and social unrest.
They also pointed out that the government is duty-bound to respond promptly to public opinion and demands.
