Grace Li speaks to RTHK's Maggie Ho
Hong Kong people living in seven major cities in Canada have held a joint campaign in support of the general strike against the government’s extradition bill.
They are also calling on the Canadian government to speak up against the now-suspended extradition bill, which they say is a proposal that violates human rights.
Hundreds of Hongkongers, as well as Canadians and immigrants from other countries took part in the rallies held over the weekend in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, Halifax and Winnipeg.
One of the organisers of the protest in Montreal, Hong Kong student Grace Li, said she was surprised more than a hundred people turned up, as the French-speaking city does not have a large population of Hong Kong people.
Li, a member of the group ACTION Free HK-Montreal, said they hope to send the message of “add oil Hongkongers, we all stand with you” to the protesters in Hong Kong.
She said they will now put more efforts in lobbying authorities to put pressure on the Hong Kong government.
Li said they hope the federal government will agree to stop supplying weapons to the SAR government and impose trade sanction to Hong Kong.
