Banners opposing the government's proposed changes to the extradition laws were strung up at universities across the territory on Friday.

Similar banners reading "oppose extradition to China" have appeared at the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University, Polytechnic University, City University, Baptist University and the Education University.

A huge yellow banner was also hung by members of the League of Social Democrats from Lion Rock denouncing the extradition bill, which allows Hong Kong to surrender suspects to jurisdictions with which the city doesn't have an agreement previously, including the mainland.

The Lion Rock banner was removed by officers from the Fire Services Department at about 10am.

Critics have warned that activists and political dissidents in Hong Kong could be sent to the mainland at China's request after the law changes.

Organisers of a demonstration on Sunday say hundreds of thousands of people are expected to take to the streets to protest against the plan which they say will undermine the city's rule of law.
