Police said on Monday that another arrest has been made over the alleged trafficking of Hong Kong people to take part in boiler room scams in Southeast Asia, bringing the total number to six.

One of the earlier suspects, a 30-year-old man, has been charged with conspiracy to defraud, officers said.

Undersecretary for Security Michael Cheuk told an RTHK programme that another person has come forward to say they are a victim of the trafficking gangs.

Cheuk said the authorities are now aware of 37 suspected victims, including 23 people still being held captive in Myanmar and Cambodia.

He declined to say whether family members should pay ransoms to secure their release.

“The government attaches great importance to the cases, we will provide all practical assistance to secure their safe return,” Cheuk said.

“For family members, it's important that they contact authorities first, either the immigration's assistance to Hong Kong residents unit or the police. We will handle the cases together and provide advice to them on what to do.”
