  • Another 300 medics arrive from the mainland

Another team of mainland medics arrived in Hong Kong on Wednesday to take care of Covid patients.

The 300-strong team, including doctors and nurses, will mainly help out at the community treatment centre at AsiaWorld-Expo which is run by the Hospital Authority.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam expressed her gratitude to the medical workers as she welcomed them at the Heung Yuen Wai Control Point.

She also told reporters afterwards that the team come from 22 top-notch hospitals in Guangdong.

“They are all highly qualified and well-trained medical personnel working in the highest grade of hospitals in the Guangdong province,” Lam said.

“They have all been selected to come based on their knowledge of Cantonese and English, and also their previous anti-epidemic experience in Guangdong or in other parts of the mainland, just like in Wuhan," she added.

“They are also very young, so they will be a major boost to the workforce of the Hospital Authority.”

Lam said with the assistance of the 300 medics, the currently understaffed 1,500-bed facility at AsiaWorld-Expo will be able to take care of more Covid patients.

She added that the team will be working in a closed-loop setting, meaning transport will be arranged to take them from their hotel to AsiaWorld-Expo and vice versa.

The CE said she is very grateful for the support from the central government, which will be arranging for more mainland medical workers to come to Hong Kong.

Seventy-five medics from the mainland had already arrived in the SAR, also to work at AsiaWorld-Expo.

The Hospital Authority said medical workers from the mainland will take up their duties "shortly".

A chief manager of the authority, Lau Ka-hin, said they will carry out similar duties as local staff, from taking care of Covid patients to prescribing medication.
