The family of national security suspect, Andy Li, said on Friday that they finally heard from the man, whose whereabouts had remained unknown since he was brought back from the mainland last month.
Li was among 12 Hongkongers who were intercepted by mainland coastguards when they were allegedly trying to flee to Taiwan on a speedboat.
Ten of them were sentenced to prison in Shenzhen, and Li was among eight of them who had completed the jail term and were sent back to the SAR on March 22.
But he did not appear in court when his national security case was mentioned here, and media reports suggested he’s being held at the Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre.
His family also complained that the authorities had refused to tell them where he is being remanded.
The younger sister of Li, Beatrice, said on social media that they have finally heard from her brother, thanks to people’s “continued attention” to his case.
“Thanks to your continued attention, they know they can’t just lock him away and we are receiving communication from Andy. More to follow as we digest the information,” she wrote.
She did not provide further details.
Li’s sister had also said the lawyer representing her brother was not engaged by the family.
The law firm of the solicitor, Lawrence Law, meanwhile, said he had no duty to inform the press or Li’s family about details of instructions he received from his client.
