A gas explosion in Taiwan has killed two people and injured five others.

The fire services said the incident happened in the early hours in an old residential building in the Sanchong district of New Taipei City.

Officials say an elderly woman was found lying in her kitchen with a gas cylinder that had be switched on.

Family members of the casualties said that they were sleeping during the explosion.

The Mayor of New Taipei City, Eric Chu visited the scene later in the morning and ordered authorities to carry out a thorough investigation.

He also offered his condolences to the victims and their families.
