Beijing's top official in Hong Kong, Wang Zhimin, has accused some local people of trying to take advantage of extradition controversy and bring chaos to the city for their own gain.

At an event at the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, the head of the Beijing liaison office in Hong Kong said foreign forces have been blatantly interfering in Hong Kong affairs.

But he did not specify who they are.

He also condemned the violence that erupted during recent anti-extradition protests, particularly the storming of Legco by protesters on July 1, saying what happened there shocked the world.

Wang added that society should watch out for a small number of Hongkongers who tried to bring chaos to the SAR and take advantage of the situation, without naming who they are.

The Beijing official also expressed the central government's "resolute" support for the Carrie Lam administration.

He also said he backs the police in performing their duties and maintaining law and order.
