Police late on Thursday said they believe a man whose body was discovered in Ta Kwu Ling was killed eight to ten days ago, adding that he was not kidnapped as previously reported.

Officers have been investigating the case since last Monday after the victim's wife sought help.

The force said the woman had reported that she had received unknown calls from people demanding the payment of $3.6 million which they said her husband owed, and that she had lost contact with him.

The victim's body was discovered on Thursday morning near a temple in a village in Ta Kwu Ling.

"Police believe the victim was taken to the location near the temple on the day when he went missing for negotiations on debt issues, and during that time, he was attacked with a sharp object and then buried," Senior Superintendent Chan Kong-ming told reporters.

Two men, aged 64 and 29, have been arrested in connection with the case.

The 51-year-old victim was earlier believed to have been kidnapped. But investigators later clarified that they see no information showing the man had been abducted.

The force said the suspects will be charged with murder and are scheduled to appear at the Fanling Magistracy on Friday.
