The Hong Kong Journalists' Association says the police commissioner, Chris Tang, offered an apology in his personal capacity to reporters who were angry at the way they were treated by the police during the anti-government protests on May 10.
Representatives from four media unions met the police chief and other senior officials on Thursday, after complaining of verbal and physical abuse from some officers on Mother's Day.
The head of the association, Chris Yeung, said they had a candid discussion with the police but he was disappointed that the commissioner didn't make any concrete promises to address their demands.
"I won't make a judgment on whether he is sincere or not," Yeung said. "An apology is an apology."
Yeung also said the police didn't advocate an official press accreditation system, amid a debate on ways to better identify reporters.
