  • Higher-than-expected turnout in pan-dem primaries

Almost 229,000 people have cast their ballots on the first day of the pan-democrat primaries, well exceeding the camp’s targeted turnout of 170,000 over a two-day period.

Summing up day one of polling on Saturday night, one of the organisers, Au Nok-hin, said voting at the 250 voting stations across Hong Kong went relatively smoothly, despite some minor arguments and scuffles between people with differing political views.

He called on people to remain calm when they’re being provoked, saying it’s important to show the world how civilised pro-democracy supporters are.

Au added that he's very pleased with the high turnout, and urged those who’ve not yet voted to cast their ballots on Sunday.

That, he said, will show the SAR government how people are determined to make their voices heard despite suggestions that participation in the primaries might constitute a breach of the national security law

Results are expected on Monday, and the camp will then finalise which candidates to field in the upcoming Legislative Council polls.
