The Chief Executive has appointed Edwina Lau as a deputy police commissioner to head a special unit within the force to gather intelligence and enforce the new national security law.

In a statement, Carrie Lam described Lau as the ideal person for the job, saying she has served in the force for 35 years and has demonstrated professionalism and superb leadership skills.

Lau will also sit on the newly formed Committee for Safeguarding National Security, which is responsible for formulating policies for national security, as well as advancing the development of the legal system and enforcement mechanisms of the city.

The committee is chaired by the Chief Executive, with the director of the CE's Office, Eric Chan, as secretary-general. It was also announced on Friday that liaison office chief Luo Huining will serve as Beijing's adviser on the committee.
