Taxpayers To Get Surcharge Waiver

The Inland Revenue Department announced today that it will waive the surcharge for tax payment by instalments for businesses and individuals in need.

Taxpayers who encounter financial difficulties in settling their tax bills on time may apply to the department for paying tax by instalments before the due dates of their demand notes. No surcharge will be imposed for a maximum period of one year from the demand notes’ due dates, provided that the instalment plans are duly adhered to, the department said, following the issue of tax demand notes for the 2020-21 year of assessment.

This measure applies to demand notes issued between May 2021 and May 2022 for salaries tax, profits tax and personal assessment for the 2020-21 year of assessment, it added.

Further, the department has extended the applicability of the previous support measures to waive the surcharge for instalment settlement of demand notes for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 years of assessment.

These support measures, however, are not applicable to people who have to settle their tax liabilities before departing Hong Kong and taxpayers paying property tax.
