Hong Kong stocks ended Thursday morning with small gains as investors cautiously await the resumption later in the day of high-level trade talks between China and the United States.

The Hang Seng index added 0.2 percent, or 46 points, to 25,729.

Investors across the region were also cautious as they sifted through conflicting reports about the outlook of the trade talks.

Global investors have been broadly upbeat in recent weeks that the meeting in Washington between top-level representatives would see at least some progress.

Shanghai rose 0.2 percent and Shenzhen was up half a percent. Sydney and Singapore each dropped more than a tenth of a percent, while Seou sank 0.8 percent. (AFP)
