Hong Kong shares recovered from early selling to end the morning session in positive territory on Thursday but traders remain on edge over fears of a global trade war.

The Hang Seng Index rose 0.1 percent, to 31,473 by the break.

On the mainland, the Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.5 percent, to 3,275, while the Shenzhen Composite Index, gave up 0.7 percent, to 1,865.

Most other Asian markets also continued their sell-off and the US dollar weakened.

Tokyo ended the morning session 0.5 percent lower, hit by strong yen.

Sydney and Seoul each slipped 0.3 percent, while Singapore dropped 0.8 percent. Taipei, Wellington, Jakarta and Manila were also sharply lower. (AFP)
