Hong Kong stocks enjoyed some much-needed gains in the morning session on Friday following a painful week that has seen the city hammered by violent protests, while investors were also boosted by fresh China-US trade optimism.

The Hang Seng index added 0.3 percent, to 26,408.

On the mainland, the Shanghai Composite Index was flat, to 2,909, while the Shenzhen Composite Index was down 0.3 percent, to 1,618.

Tokyo went into the break 0.7 percent higher, Sydney jumped 0.8 percent, Seoul climbed 1 percent and Singapore was up 0.1 percent. Taipei, Wellington and Jakarta also posted healthy gains. (AFP)
