Hong Kong stocks sank more than 1 percent on Monday morning, extending last week's losses on worries about a global trade war after Donald Trump imposed tariffs on imports of steel and aluminium.

The Hang Seng Index fell 1.1 percent, to 30,238 by the break.

On the mainland, the Shanghai Composite Index slipped 0.2 percent, to 3,249 while the Shenzhen Composite Index rose 0.1 percent, or 3.4 points, to 1,824.

Mos of the Asian markets also turned negative as the fallout from Trump's warnings continued to spook investors.

Tokyo finished the morning session 0.7 percent lower. Sydney and Seoul each slipped 0.5 percent while Singapore was off 0.6 percent and Manila gave up 0.8 percent.

The US dollar came under further pressure on worries about a trade war, with the safe haven yen extending last week's gains, helped by comments from the head of the Bank of Japan last week suggesting crisis-era stimulus could be scaled back from next year.
